The Impact on Environment Award seeks to identify and reward innovative environmental initiatives that can objectively demonstrate the positive impact that they have had on the organisation and society at large. Entries must relate to projects, services or innovations that have been successfully implemented and for which proven (and evidenced) benefits and outcomes can be shown. Remember care for the environment is about more than just energy and waste management – procedures for which are now standard across many organisations.

“ Society at large is placing ever greater emphasis on environmental issues – as evidenced by the recent Paris Agreement. As custodians of the working environment, FM’s are uniquely placed to influence the impact that their organisations have on the environment. This is of course where this Award comes into play. What we are looking for are entries that demonstrate the positive impact that FM can have on the broad range of environmentally related issues – both within the context of the organisation itself and in relation to wider society.“
Entries should first provide a background description with regards to what care for the environment means to the organisation. They should then go on to explain the nature of the environmental initiative(s) that form(s) the basis of the entry and demonstrate the impact that the initiative(s) has/have had when applied in at least one ‘real life’ example.
The judges expect to see objective evidence of the practical implementation of environmentally friendly FM practices and their impact (including any economic and/or wider societal implications). The means of measuring the impact of the initiative(s) implemented is down to the entrant but it should be based around a methodology that uses environmental, economic and social principles.
Entries must have demonstrable results; please do not submit an entry in this category for projects that are planned or are in development, in the process of being implemented, launched or are aspirational.
The following must be demonstrated in the submission:
> What care for the environment means to the organisation and how the FM team developed the initiatives(s) using the organisation’s environmental ‘profile’ as a starting point.
> Baseline information that captures the social, environmental and economic aspects of the initiative(s).
> How the FM team went about implementing the initiative(s).
> The objectively measured impact that implementation of the initiatives has had on the FM team, the organisation and the wider business community (including details of the methodology(ies) used to calculate the ‘quantum’ of that impact).
> How the entry promotes (or intends to promote) to the organisation or wider community the learning and experience achieved through successfully delivering sustainability initiative(s).
The written submission for this category is worth 25% of the overall score. The presentation round is worth 75%.
